Film Director Dies

Anyone remember this movie? About the chinese VCD seller and the malay girl he fell in love with? It was called Sepet and the movie bagged several international awards .. including the prestigious Asian Film Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2005.

The movie firmly established Yasmin Ahmad as a filmaker to be contended with .. besides, her themes for most of her movies tended to deal with social issues usually not touched by other local filmakers.

Apparently Ms Ahmad collapsed during a presentation on Thursday (23/7) and had to be rushed to the hospital - she was reported to have suffered a stroke.

And last night at about 23:30 hrs she passed away - the full report by NST online here.

I guess Yasmin Ahmad was the only filmaker that made me look at Malaysian made movies in a different light - most local productions are .. well, let's just say it's not what would appeal to me personally.

But Ms Ahmad had that special way of looking at things .. at situations and somehow managing to capture it on camera .. telling a story thru her eyes. It was refreshing and unique. It made me want to see more and expect more.

She will be dearly missed in the industry.

R.I.P Yasmin ...
